There were three more specifically labeled garment bags. Voza instructed, “Just put on exactly what I’ve set out in each bag and remember the designers. Easy-peasy, Mango-tango.” I didn’t know why Voza kept calling me Mango-tango, but I didn’t mind it from him. He was high energy and so friendly. I started liking the sound of it.

On the drive back to the Valley Arms, Jericka pretended she was a reporter and asked me a lot of questions. “Are you excited to be the star of a new show?”

“Yes.”

“What do you think of L.A.?”

“It’s nice.”

“Do you think your life will change now?”

“Probably.”

Jericka pulled into the Valley Arms parking lot. I was ready to jump out of the car to show Mom the price tags on the clothes and pretend we had to pay for them. It was too good a practical joke to pass up. But Jericka asked me to wait a while; we needed to talk.

“All the questions I was asking you, Mango, are the kinds of questions you’ll be asked all the time starting tomorrow.”

“Okay. Cool.”

“Well, one- or two-word answers are not exactly cool.”

“Why?”

“It’s your job to be interesting. So the people watching get to share your experiences. Live the fantasy they imagine you’re living.”

“How do I do that?”

“I’ll text you a list of questions tonight. I want you to think about making your answers interesting by adding a touch of the personal. For example, if you’re asked what you think of Los Angeles, how could you answer in a more colorful and specific way?”

I bit my bottom lip. It took me a moment, trying to come up with a good answer. I said, “I love the weather, and there’s lots of stuff to do, like the amusement parks and the beaches and stuff.”

“That’s good. You might also want to mention your favorite ride at an amusement park, or what it was like to see the Pacific Ocean for the first time, or something fun that happened at the beach. Tonight I want you to think about each question I send and how you’d answer it with more than one or two words. We’ll go over them in the morning, so get a good night’s rest.”

“Is TJ going to be at the interview, too?”

“Oh no. TJ’s flying back home for a few days.”

“What?” He never mentioned that to me. Then again, when would he? He was busy spending time with his dad, and I was busy with everything going on in my life. We’d barely had any time to even talk on the phone since we’d arrived in L.A. Now, to find out he was on his way home. Why did he get to go home and not me? “That’s not fair. He gets to go home and I don’t?”

“His mother wants him there for her wedding.”

“Oh yeah, I forgot about that.”

“Another thing you need to think about, Mango.
